YouTube app gets offline viewing support in India

NEW DELHI: Almost two months after making the announcement, Google has finally started rolling out the offline viewing feature to users of its YouTube Android and iOS app in India, Indonesia and the Philippines.

The feature allows users to temporarily store videos offline to watch later during short periods of low or no internet connectivity. For videos where this feature is available, users can choose to add the video for offline viewing by tapping on the offline icon located under the video frame.

According to Google, videos can be played back without an internet connection for 48 hours once taken offline. It adds that a large part of popular YouTube content in India is already available for users to view offline, including video content from labels like T-Series, Saregama and Yashraj Films.
To download videos users can simply tap on the offline icon (a down arrow symbol) that sits under the video frame and select the desired quality. The icon will be visible only against videos that have offline viewing enabled.

Content owners can choose if they want to opt to allow offline viewing for their media. A YouTube spokesperson had previously informed TOI that views of the videos and ads will be tracked offline as well.

The move is aimed at increasing the use of YouTube as offline viewing will allow users to download and store more content when they get access to a good internet connection, and view it at a later time. It will also improve the viewing experience eliminating buffering due to bad or intermittent connectivity.

John Harding, vice president of engineering at YouTube, said, "In a country like India, the future of the Internet is mobile. 85% of the internet population will connect to the Internet with a mobile phone before any other device. Already, we're seeing over 40% of our traffic in India come from mobile devices, and we want to make sure we are making YouTube as enjoyable as possible for these mobile-first users. By launching this offline experience on YouTube in India today, we hope to help people move past the challenges of data connection, speed and cost to enjoy a smooth, buffer-free version of YouTube."

Meanwhile, Google has also updated the YouTube Android app bringing material design (a new visual design implemented with Android 5.0 Lollipop). The YouTube team says the updated app for Android puts more focus on videos and channels, and looks more like the other Google apps. It also now includes search filtering to make it easier to find videos.
